Adoption Application
to adopt a Gentle Giant or a Little Giant

Please read the following information carefully as it provides
important information detailing our many requirements.

If you are interested in adopting a Gentle Giant or a Little Giant from us, please complete the following Adoption Application.  Please answer each question completely, then select 'Submit' at the end of the Adoption Application.

You will receive a response within one week, indicating whether (1) you are approved; (2) we have a question or problem with one or more of your answers; or (3) you are denied. We reserve the right to approve or not to approve any application for any reason.

Sometimes, we are overwhelmed with Adoption Applications, so if you do not hear from us within 7 days, please contact us by email at adoptions@gentlegiantsrescue.com to make sure that we have received your application. If you write to us, please be sure to include your full name, as we are unable to locate applications without the applicant's full name.

Answering each question completely and accurately will expedite the approval process. If you are approved, we will be able to promptly set up an appointment for you to adopt your new family member. We have adoption appointments available seven (7) days a week at 3:00 p.m each day by prior appointment.

If there is a problem with your Adoption Application, we may give you a conditional approval, subject to you resolving an issue that conflicts with our minimum adoption requirements.

ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS

We adopt to our gentle giants and little giants into safe, loving homes where the adopters are able to provide love, affection, stability, safety, and the financial ability to provide medical care as and when their adopted dog needs it.

We adopt to people who live all across America, including Hawaii (but not to Alaska), and we adopt to people who live in Canada, but you MUST come here to Riverside County California to adopt, because we will only adopt to people who we have met in person and who we are 100% sure will provide a safe, loving home to our Gentle Giants and to our Little Giants. There are no exceptions to this requirement. We are not currently adopting dogs into Mexico, South America, Europe, or Asia, because the legalities of enforcing our contracts in most foreign countries are prohibitive.

We adopt our dogs to live with their adopters in single family homes with fenced yards, and in condos, townhouses, apartments, and mobile homes without fenced yards.

Borzoi, Scottish Deerhounds, Saluki and Silken Windhounds are special breeds that are only available for adoption to people who have previously adopted a dog from us.

We must be able to contact you in case of an emergency. You will need to furnish us with your home telephone number, your work telephone number, your cell telephone number (if you have one), and a separate emergency telephone number. If you only furnish us with a cell telephone number in your Adoption Application, we will not be able to approve your Adoption Application.

Our Gentle Giants and Little Giants are the ultimate "COMPANION" dogs - incredibly loving, affectionate, and exceptionally well behaved. They are quiet, patient, and so human-like that you will be amazed.

Our Gentle Giants and Little Giants live for their family (you), and they are wonderfully loving and very gentle with children of all ages and with all other animals.

Our Gentle Giants and Little Giants want to spend as much time with you as you have available for them. They are very emotional and will miss you very much when you are away from them. If you are away from your home more than nine (9) hours a day, we cannot adopt a dog to you.

Our Gentle Giants do not require much exercise or much space, they eat just a little bit more than smaller dogs, and they are the #1 apartment dogs in most cities.

Adoption Fees: We are a charitable, non-profit corporation. Our adoption fees range from $490.00 to $990.00 based upon our costs involved with each dog for the neuter/spay, shots, temperament testing, training, care up until the dog is adopted, transportation costs bringing the dog in, special surgical procedures, and our overall cost of operation. There are very few dogs, if any, whose adoption fee is $490.00, and there are very few dogs, if any, whose adoption fee is $990.00. Almost all of our adoption fees are somewhere in between.

Note: If you use an aggressive spam blocker program, or if your email program is configured to only accept incoming mail from your "white" list, we may not be able to get back in touch with you.

Longevity: Our Physical And Emotional Care Has Doubled The Average Length Of Our Dogs Lives!
Nurturing The Physical And Emotional Needs And Instincts Of Our Gentle Giants And Little Giants
Our Gentle Giants Live An Average Of 14 To 18 Years!

Because we have been enormously successful in prolonging the healthy, happy lives of our Gentle Giants, we have strict adoption requirements so that our adopters can hopefully enjoy the same amazing success that we have had. Everyone wants their dog to live the longest, healthiest, happiest life, and if you agree to comply with our requirements, you will have the opportunity to love and enjoy a Gentle Giant from us and have your loving canine family member be with you nearly twice as long as you would have otherwise.

Our Gentle Giants and Little Giants are house dogs, not outside dogs. And, they are not garage dogs, laundry room dogs, barn dogs, shed dogs or patio dogs. They must live inside your home in the main living area as a member of your family, day and night, and go outside only to eat, to go to the bathroom, for short periods of play, and to be with you and your family whenever you are outside. At all other times, they must be inside the main living area of your home.

Many people have traditionally left their dogs outside during the day, and brought their dogs in only at night. Their dogs usually live short lives (in the case of Gentle Giants, usually 7 to 9 years). Some people leave their dogs outside day and night, and their dogs usually live even shorter lives.

We cater to the physical and emotional needs of our dogs and they live a lot longer.

For example, we allow our dogs the freedom to go outside whenever they want to, and conversely, the freedom to come back inside whenever they want to. These are the same freedoms that a human has.

So, it does take a little extra effort to pay attention to what your dog is trying to communicate to you. And by doing this, your dog feels that he or she has some say so in their life and they don't give up and resign themselves that they are either “cooped up” outside or “cooped up” inside. This freedom we give them enriches their emotional needs and their spirit, and they are happier. Happier dogs live longer.

Our dogs go outside every few hours (or sooner if they want to). Yes, they frolic and play in between feeding times. You can see that in the many photos on our website. But, after about 15 to 20 minutes, they've had enough and that frolic and play gets old for them and they want to come back into their "den" (figuratively speaking), which is their house (and if you adopt from us, your house).

We say in our literature that a “doggie door” is optional, not required. What isn't optional is leaving your adopted dog outside other than when it is eating, going to the bathroom, briefly playing, or being with you or your family when you are outside.

Our dogs are house dogs, and they must be allowed to stay in your house, or more pointedly, they must be left in your house and not left outside, whether you are home or not.

When we started rescuing Great Danes 11 years ago, our dogs were living an average of 7 to 9 years. Now, along with the many other Gentle Giant breeds that we rescue, we have them living an average of 14 to 18 years. A significant attribute of our success in doubling the length of their lives is to nurture their needs and instincts, and living inside has shown itself time and again . . . in fact, thousands of times with the giant breed dogs that we've had living here during the last 11 years, to be a key ingredient, if not the most important ingredient, in lengthening their lives.

Spaying And Neutering

All of our Gentle Giants and Little Giants are spayed or neutered at six months of age or as soon as we get them after six months of age. Spaying (females) and neutering (males) does not only prevent excessive breeding, which, if left unspayed and unneutered, results in so many millions of unwanted dogs that end up in animal shelters each year, but, spaying and neutering your dog at an early age (the optimum age is six months) is critical to extend and prolong your dog's life.

Cancer is the #1 killer of dogs, and 85% of all cancers (whether they end up developing in the bones, organs, blood or skin) originate in the reproductive organs. So, by spaying or neutering your dog at an early age, you are giving your dog the gift of a much longer life! This is one of the most important things that you can do for your dog, and it is one of the key things that we do to help our dogs live an average of 14 to 18 years.

If you want to adopt a dog from us, you must spay or neuter your dog prior to be approved for adoption. Also, unspayed and unneutered dogs do not always get along with spayed and neutered dogs, and we have achieved an amazing level of socialization, good behavior and easy handling with our dogs (see Our Gentle Giants Training) by combining spaying/neutering with our immensely successful training techniques. We feel that it is in the best interest and safety for our dog and for your dog that you spay or neuter your dog before we adopt a dog to you.

We Do Not Adopt Our Dogs As Working Dogs Or To Dog Breeders

Our dogs are adopted only as personal companion pets, and are not adopted to provide any form of work. In addition, we do not adopt our dogs to people who breed dogs.

We Do Not Allow Our Dogs To Be Kept In Crates Or Kennels!

Our dogs are crated trained, but we only use crates when our youngest puppies are learning to be housebroken. When our puppies are housebroken, usually at four to six months of age, we stop using crates. If a puppy is still in the chewing stage, we will "baby gate" them in our kitchen when we can't watch them. Giant breed dogs are not comfortable in crates, and they are not happy in kennels, so we don't use either after four to six months of age.

Keeping Your Gentle Giant Out Of The Sun And Out Of The Heat

Giant breed dogs need to stay out of the sun. Most giant breeds have a single coat of fur, and have no protection against the harmful rays of the sun. They can develop skin cancer very quickly. Once the skin cancer develops, the dogs usually develop internal cancerous tumors as well. This can quickly lead to death.

Other breeds of dogs have a short, thick inner coat of fur that protects them from the sun. Because most giant breeds do not have a short, thick inner coat of fur, they should not be allowed to lie out in the sun at all.

Giant breed dogs also need to stay out of the heat. Their bodies do not dissipate heat well, and they can get heat stroke, which can cripple them or kill them.

If someone wants to keep their dog outside, whether it is during the day or at night, whether they are home or not, we will not adopt to them.

Our Successful Feeding And Care Procedures

Our care and feeding program has worked magnificently for the thousands of giant breed dogs and many small breed dogs in the last 11 years here where we could see and experience and tabulate the results first hand. No one else in the country that we know of who cares for dogs has accomplished this or anywhere near this to our knowledge.

It is our love for these dogs and our total commitment to saving, enriching and lengthening their lives that has provided us with the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these magnificient animals.

That is why we do what we do and why we have (what may seem strict to some people) the requirements that we have. In the end, the dogs we adopt have proven to be living longer, happier lives in their new adopted homes, and that has made their adopters happier because their loving canine companion is with them longer. You can read this first hand in the many emails that we have posted on our website. And, you can see a loving, healthy 16 year old Great Dane named "Princess Leah" that we adopted (please see photo and emails above ).

Our Gentle Giants World Class Canine Cuisine

We have our dogs living far longer than is traditional for our giant breeds.  Our program for increased longevity combines early spay and neuter, special feeding and care, and our high nutrition, low protein, low fat dog food.  Because our dog food is so nutritious, our dogs can obtain all the nutrition they need by eating less food than with other dog food formulas.  This provides your adopted dog with increased protection against bloat and torsion, a major killer of giant breed dogs.

We require dog food with our minimum specifications to be fed to our adopted dogs. The requirements are as follows:
Crude Protein = 22% - lower protein content to protect against hypertrophic osteo dystrophy in puppies and panosteitus in adult dogs; Crude Fat = 9% - lower fat content to protect against heart disease; Omega-3 Fatty Acids = .7% minimum - for healthy skin and a healthy coat; Glucosamine and Chondroitin for bone, hip, and joint benefits; and Probiotics to increase digestion and absorption of food.

We recommend Gentle Giants World Class Canine Cuisine dog food to maximize the longevity of our Gentle Giants and Little Giants.  It is specially formulated and, in addition to complying with our minimum requirements, it contains 3 protein sources, 9 real garden vegetables, 3 natural fruits, and 4 nutritious grains. It also includes enriched levels of antioxidants (Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Beta Carotene) to help support the immune system, sequestered trace minerals (SQM) for improved mineral bioavailability, and numerous important vitamins and nutrients. As you may have already read, we have our dogs living far longer than is traditional for our giant breeds. Our program for increased longevity combines early spay and neuter, our special feeding and care techniques, and Gentle Giants World Class Canine Cuisine high nutrition, low protein, low fat dog food. Because the dog food is so nutritious, our dogs can obtain all the nutrition they need by eating less food than with other dog food formulas. This provides your adopted dog with increased protection against bloat and torsion, a major killer of giant breed dogs.

Do you understand that when you adopt a dog from us, you will be required to only feed dog food that meets our specifications to your adopted dog for its entire lifetime? Gentle Giants World Class Canine Cuisine does meet those specifications and we highly recommend it. (This requirement may be modified if your veterinarian prescribes a special diet while under medical care).  Gentle Giants World Class Canine Cuisine Chicken, Rice and Oatmeal Recipe was formulated with the highest quality ingredients and with the proper balance of protein and fat content to maximize the longevity of our Gentle Giants and Little Giants (our dog food is excellent for all breeds and for all ages). If you haven't already done so, please see Gentle Giants World Class Canine Cuisine for further details.

The Bonding Process

All adults and children living in the same home must attend the adoption appointment.

A comment from a potential adopter: “Our granddaughter will be 18 years of age in four months and will be moving out of the household. We can bring her along if you wish, but it will probably have no bearing on the matter.

Our response: "Yes, it will have a bearing on the bonding process with your newly adopted dog. The reason that we want your granddaughter here if she is presently living in your home is not to have a bearing on your selection of your dog, but because we require all our adopters to take their newly adopted dog that they adopt from us directly home and NOT introduce it to anyone (other than to the members of their family who were here at the adoption appointment) for two weeks. This is to cement the bonding process. If, during the first two weeks that your newly adopted dog is at your home, someone comes to your house, we want you to put your newly adopted dog in another room where it will not meet or see anyone other than you and your wife, and your granddaughter. After two weeks, your newly adopted dog will have properly bonded with you and your family, and you may then introduce it to the world. Leaving your granddaughter at home while she is still living there would foil the intent and success of the bonding process. That is why she must come."

"Princess Leah" 16 years old (left), "Marble" 8 years old (center),
and "Sadie" 2 years old (right) with Ed and Lindy Kalpakoff

Hi Tracy,

Just wanted to let you know that your 16 year old "Princess Leah" acts like she's a puppy.

She's Ed's baby. Follows him everywhere and loves her walks.

She's awesome!!!

I take "Marble" with me to the park on the weekends. All she wants is to be by my side.

YIPPEEEEE, I have my own dog, ha! ha!

"Sadie" is always causing some kind of ruckus. She's just like "Holly" in so many ways.

We will take some good photos of all of them and send them to you.

It just melts my heart to see "Princess" enjoying life in our home.

She's soooo happy!

And, so are we!!!

Lindy Kalpakoff

Our Unique Procedures For Feeding And Care That Have Proven So Successful For Us

Here is how we feed our dogs to maximize their life span . . .

We feed our Gentle Giants World Class Canine Cuisine only, because it is highly nutritious with low protein and low fat content* **
We feed dry food only - Only if a dog is severely underweight or upon the recommendation of a veterinarian, do we add canned food
We elevate all of our food and water bowls at a height so that our dogs don't have to lean down to eat, they just tilt their heads down to eat*
We do not limit the amount of dog food that we feed at each feeding. If our dogs are hungry, we feed them more.
We feed our dry food for 10 to 15 minutes only, and then we remove all food* - We never free feed* - We always provide fresh water daily
We do not allow our dogs to exercise for 1 hour before and 1 hour after each feeding* - We do not feed for 1 hour after riding in a vehicle*
We feed our puppies under 6 months of age 7 to 8 times a day*
We feed our puppies 6 months of age to 1 year old 6 to 7 times a day*
We feed our puppies and adults over 1 year old 5 or more times a day*

* We do this to avoid bloat and torsion
** Heart Healthy

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU COMPLETE
OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION

To QUALIFY to ADOPT a Gentle Giant or a Little Giant from us,
you will need to agree and comply with (1) through (19) below.

Do you agree to comply with each the following?
Please check "Yes" or "No" for each statement below.
YES NO
  (1) Each question in our Adoption Application marked with a application requirements must have a typed answer - all of your answers must be complete and truthful.
  (2) All adults and children currently living in your household MUST ATTEND the adoption appointment here at our facility - there are no exceptions to this requirement.
  (3) The number of hours that you are away from your home will determine the minimum age of the dog that you can adopt.
  (4) Your dogs must be spayed or neutered because our dogs for adoption are, and non neutered and non spayed dogs do not always gets along with neutered and spayed dogs.
  (5) Our Gentle Giants and Little Giants are HOUSE DOGS. They MUST BE ALLOWED to stay in your house day and night, whether you are home or not.
  (6) They are NOT OUTSIDE DOGS, NOT GARAGE DOGS, NOT PATIO DOGS, and NOT LAUNDRY ROOM DOGS! If you state in your Adoption Application that your adopted dog will be kept outside at any time, night or day, your Adoption Application will be denied.
  (7) Our Gentle Giants and Little Giants like to live inside your house with you as a member of your family, and they usually like to go outside only when they need to go to the bathroom, to eat, for brief periods of play (15 to 20 minutes), or if you go outside - they want to be with you. Having a 'doggie door' (optional, but highly recommended) is an excellent way to allow them to go outside when they want to, and to be able to come back inside when they want to. Doggie doors are available for all types of doors, including sliding glass doors.
  (8) Unlike other breeds of dogs, most of our Gentle Giants and Little Giants have only a single, outer coat of fur, and have no protection from heat or cold. Because of that, they can get heat stroke (which can cause death) and skin cancer from the sun, which is another reason that they should be allowed to stay inside. They also get cold easily. Even our Gentle Giants and Little Giants with longer hair and an under coat of fur prefer to be inside. All of our Gentle Giants and Little Giants are completely housebroken, neat, and very clean.
  (9) You must be at least 25 years of age to adopt a dog from us.

  (13) We do not adopt our youngest puppies (8 weeks to 28 weeks) into homes where the adopter(s) are gone for more than 2 hours. It isn't safe for the puppy.
  (14) If you live in a house, you must have a fully enclosed yard with a fence at least five (5) feet high. We do adopt to people living in condos, townhouses, apartments and mobile homes who don't have fenced yards.
  (15) You must remove any poisonous plants or trees in any yard where your adopted Gentle Giant or Little Giant will have access.
  (16) If you have a swimming pool, you must have a fully enclosed fence around the pool to make sure that your Gentle Giant or Little Giant doesn't fall into the pool and drown - there are no exceptions to this requirement.
